Cider battle: an original way to say goodbye to the old year

The Uruguayans hold a peculiar celebration on 31st December with loads of cider consumed.

LA SIDRA.- Hundreds of people in Montevideo bid farewell to 2017 with the traditional cider battle in the Port Market.

At midday, dozens of people had already gathered in the square, where there were also improvised cider-selling stalls.

A boy broke the ice by throwing cider to a bunch of passers-by and the battle started, full of music, dancing and people ready to party.

As it is located in a central area frequented by tourists, hundreds of people gathered in the place, willing to celebrate the end of the year by getting soaked in cider. Eventually, fireworks were displayed to motivate people and end up the celebration.

This tradition joins some others these days, like tearing off the old calendars and scatter their pages all around the Old Town.
